Yamel joins Not A Great Whisperer to talk about her life and why she started One Love Doula Services. Yamel is married to her High School sweetheart and together they have five kids. She is an experienced Registered Nurse, Doula, Certified Lactation Counselor and Childbirth Educator. Yamel gave birth to her 6th baby, One Love Doula Services about eight years ago. The journey of mamahood coupled with entrepreneurship has tested her strengths but has also been extremely humbling. As a doula, Yamel sees her role as one to provide support and guidance throughout the prenatal, birth and postpartum period and being welcomed into the most sacred time in a person’s life is never something she takes for granted. Her doula business is now a bigger project than originally expected, with her team of over 9 birth and postpartum doulas. Yamel began her journey in birth work when she was 10 years old, her mom experienced precipitous labor at home, and emergency services were slow to arrive. She quickly went to her mother’s bedside and kept her calm until help arrived to their Brooklyn family home. Looking back on her journey she sees now how everything is as it should be. Yamel recalls picking up every single Parents magazine she could get her hands on when pregnant with her first and now she sits on the Board of Advisors for Parents magazine and is also an expert article reviewer. Yamel’s everyday mantra is “Everything happens as it should” and is exactly what she hopes her children will learn while they watch her follow her dreams.
