Jon Dengler joins Not A Great Whisperer Podcast to talk about how WellBuilt Bikes got started and how the community can get involved. WellBuilt Bikes is a non-profit bike shop that was the first social enterprise started under The Well, a local non-profit. WellBuilt sells refurbished bikes at affordable prices and then invests the sales revenue into an “earn a bike” program so that those that lack money can access the transportation they need to get around town by putting in community service. Jon talks about the amazing work he does everyday to support others and what working with the “materially poor” really entails. Ms. Patrica Brown joins Not a Great Whisperer Podcast to talk about losing her son to gun violence in March 2020. Ms. Patrica shares her heartbreaking and powerful story about losing her youngest son and how it is an everyday battle for her. She decided to create the group, Rise Up for Peace, to help support other parents who have lost a child/children and to encourage the community to stop the violence. The second peace walk is on March 20th, 2021 and will again be in partnership with The Tampa Police Department and Community Peace Advocate, Edie Darling at Robles Park. Ms. Patricia’s mission is to provide emotional support to families who have lost loved ones to senseless violence. Uniting as “One Voice, One Sound” against violence by joining forces with public officials, law enforcement and like minded organizations who have the heart for the hurting, helpless and hopeless individuals who are seeking closure and committed to the soul purpose of ushering peace, love and unity back into our communities. Natasha, President of Redefining Refuge joins Not A Great Whisperer Podcast. Redefining Refuge is a non-profit dedicated to fighting for children who have been victims of the depraved injustice of sexual abuse, and an emphasis on domestic sex trafficking of minors. Natasha discusses moving to the United States from South Africa during her senior year of high school. She went to USF and decided to go to a community alliance meeting in 2008 when she heard a discussion on “child prostitutes” and could not believe what she was hearing when the age of consent is 18 years old. This sparked something inside her and she began researching and fighting for young children living with this trauma and opened Redefining Refuge in 2010 to provide services to survivors. Quarantined yet inspired, Katy Rey runs the show solo for Not A Great Whisperer Podcast to discuss the empowering and courageous book Untamed, by Glennon Doyle. Glennon Doyle is the author of one of my favorite books, Love Warrior but Untamed was a book that will stay number one for a very long time. This book hits so many important topics and focuses on trusting ourselves and to stop trying to meet the expectations the world puts on us at such an early age. I go into specific parts of the book that hype me up and help me explain feelings I have never been able to put into words. I also joke and remind people that if you leave your partner to find yourself and free yourself, that does not always mean your soulmate is a 2 time Olympic gold medalist soccer player like Glennon Doyle’s. Her love for Abby and their relationship is unique, beautiful and takes a lot of work. This whole book keeps you wanting more, and after you read it, all you can do is yearn to be free just like her. This is the first time in a very long time, while I was reading I was taking notes because I wanted to go back to the messages and “golden nuggets” in every chapter.
